Vikings 2007 Schedule Observations

I was reading some interesting observations regarding the 2007 Minnesota Vikings Schedule on Vikings.com and I thought I would summarize the points and post them on my own Vikings Vixen blog. The facts are rather unimportant, but fun to read any way as Vikings fans start to ponder the upcoming season.

7 observations on the 2007 Vikings schedule:

1. Primetime game

The Vikings have just one scheduled primetime game in 2007. The Vikings will host the Chicago Bears on Monday night, December 17. The Vikings and Bears haven't played each other on Monday Night Football since 1996.

2. Common non-divisional opponents from 2006

Of non-divisional games, the Vikings have two rematches scheduled with teams from the 2006 season. The Vikings will have a chance to avenge last season's 9-3 loss at San Francisco when the team returns to Monster Park on December 9th. The Washington Redskins will try to even the score when they come to the Metrodome on December 23rd.
The Vikings opened the season last year in Washington and defeated the Washington Redskins by a score of 19-16, giving Brad Childress his first victory as an NFL head coach.

3. Early division games

The Vikings play all three divisional opponents early in the season, including three games in the first five games of the season, with two of those contests coming on the road. The results of the games will definitely set the mood for the entire year.

4. AFC West opponents on the schedule

The NFL scheduling formula dictates that each division plays another division in the other conference on a rotating basis. In 2007, the NFC North teams are scheduled to play the AFC West teams. Consequently, the Vikings host the Chargers on November 4 and the Oakland Raiders on November 18 and travel to Kansas City on September 23 and Denver to close out the season on December 30.

The Vikings vs Broncos matchup on December 30th will send the Vikes to INVESCO Field at Mile High. The game is assured to be in cold weather and probably snowy!

5. Star players will be in the Metrodome

The Vikings will host an exciting lineup of visiting players this year. A part of a home team fan's gameday experience is seeing the opposing team and it's star players. In 2007, the Vikings welcome players such as Terrell Owens, Michael Vick, Brett Favre, Brian Urlacher, and LaDainian Tomlinson.

6. For the sixth time in ten seasons, the Vikings open at home

Last season the Vikings opened at Washington, but 2007 will see the team open at home for the sixth time since 1998.

7. Vikings play seven games against 2006 playoff participants

In playing Chicago Bears (twice), Dallas Cowboys, Kansas City Chiefs, the New York Giants, San Diego Chargers and Philadelphia Eagles, the Vikings have seven games in 2007 against teams that made the 2006 playoffs. Four of those seven games (Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City, New York) come on the road and the Vikings have a stretch from Week 6 through Week 9 where they play four straight 2006 playoff teams, including three division winners and the team with last season's best regular season record (the 14-2 Chargers). The schedule is definitely tough for a Vikings team that may not have what it takes to shine.
